The Betty and Mort Marshall Scholarship Fund

The Betty and Mort Marshall Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in loving memory of two soul mates that loved, lived and shared their blessings with others.

 Betty and Mort’s love story began in Washington, DC and flourished over 66 years together during which they touched the lives of countless people with their kindness, generosity, wisdom and humor.

The joy of Betty’s life was spending time with and taking care of her family and friends. Betty was an incredible cook, she put love and care into everything she made and never allowed anyone to leave her home hungry. Betty was always the life of the party; she seized any opportunity for a get-together, loved entertaining, dancing and making everyone feel special.

Betty was kind, thoughtful, generous, clever, hilarious, caring, friendly, happy, sassy and truly one of a kind.

Mort enjoyed an accomplished career and was a practicing architect until the day he died. Following Mort’s retirement from the federal government after 32 years of distinguished service, he founded The Marshall Group in 1983 after much persuasion from Betty. Mort was a graduate of Tuskegee University, an accomplished Architect, Air Force Veteran of the Korean War, mentor, advocate and recipient of numerous awards and professional recognitions.

Mort was loving, supportive, indulgent, funny, intelligent, forgiving, generous with praise and someone who could always be reminded of a good story.

Because of their loving hearts and generous spirit Betty and Mort opened their hearts and home to family and friends, both new and old. They were always willing to help someone in need of assistance, never expecting anything in return.

Betty and Mort were blessed with a loving family and countless friends. They were consistently engaged in the lives of their children and grandchildren. They traveled the world and visited dozens of countries together. They were passionate about living life to the fullest and making a difference in as many people’s lives as possible.

On April 26, 2018 Betty lost her courageous fight with Breast Cancer. During Betty’s battle with cancer she never complained or asked, “Why me?”. Even during her cancer treatments Betty remained the life of the party and always brought a smile to the faces of the nurses and doctors.

Cancer was no stranger to Betty and Mort. Mort had four bouts cancer between 2005 and 2017. No matter what life threw at them, Betty and Mort always remained positive and reflected on how fortunate they were and the good life that they shared.

The love that Betty and Mort shared was such that one could not exist on this earth without the other. On June 13, 2018, two days before Betty’s memorial service, Mort passed away suddenly. Though heartbroken over the loss of his beloved wife, until the day he died he reflected on the good life that they shared and the many ways that they had been blessed. On June 15, 2018 two lives well lived were celebrated.

Betty and Mort were true examples of what it means to love and be loved, to live life to the fullest and to generously share your blessings with others.

In loving Memory of Betty & Mort Marshall, and in celebration of the distinguished career that Mort enjoyed with Betty’s support, a Memorial Scholarship has been established to promote diversity in the building sciences and benefit students pursuing a career in architecture and engineering at a Historically Black College or University.

The establishment of this annual scholarship was made possible because of a generous endowment from Betty and Mort, a sponsorship from the National Institute of Building Sciences and contributions from friends, family and colleagues.
